Partial Stem Cutting : A Simple Way to Encourage Stronger Growth

Partial Stem Cutting : A Simple Way to Encourage Stronger Growth

We’re excited to share one of our favorite and most successful propagation techniques 🌱 Some of you might already know, but we just have to share it because it’s such a fun and rewarding way for us to observe plant growth!

Over the past 1 - 2 years, we’ve had excellent results using this technique on both Philodendron and Monstera varieties.

Instead of fully separating a cutting right away, we carefully cut about 80% through the main stem (vine), leaving around 20% still attached to the Mother plant. By keeping that connection, the plant can continue sending water and nutrients through the stem while encouraging each node to wake up and push new growth.

There’s no need to change any care routine or environment. Just keep everything consistent and let the plant do its thing!

After a few months, most healthy nodes begin producing new buds. Once the new growth has developed strong roots and the buds are mature and sturdy, we make the final cut and fully separate the section from the mother plant. It can then be transplanted into its own pot and just like that, you have a healthy new baby plant!
